Pebin' the night away

The chat's ninth name. Set by Kyle Derrick on 2022-12-01 in apparent response to a 2022 Mac Miller (or Sam Cooke) earworm and held for 44 days through 2023-01-14, when Cullen Conway replaced it with the more enduring Oops, All Hoeny Boys. Roughly 3,729 messages were sent under this name.

Pebin' the night away is the chat's first Kyle-Derrick-set name. The rename is recorded at 2022-12-01 21:38 UTC and the chat's only in-message reaction to the change is by Daniel Miller, one minute later:

"Pebin' the night away , this is v funny." — Daniel Miller, 2022-12-01

The construction is a mondegreen of Sam Cooke's "Twistin' the Night Away," with the verb replaced by pebin' — a Kyle-coined elision of peeing. The form does not propagate as a verb beyond the name itself; the corpus contains exactly one further use of pebin in chat content:

"Suffocation, no pebin, don't give a fuck if I cum in your revis" — Cullen Conway, 2023-01-01

The line — a parody of Mac Miller's "Self Care" ("Suffocation, no breathing") — is the only documented attempt to extend pebin' into other songs. It does not recur after the era ends.

Significance of the era

The Pebin' era is the chat's New Year's bracket between the close of 2022 and the formal Oops, All Hoeny Boys renaming on 2023-01-14. Notable activity during the period includes:

  • 2022-11-11Kyle Derrick coins Mmm alcohol just outside the era's start (the message falls in the prior Steamin' at Hennys era).
  • 2023-01-08 — Kyle posts what becomes the chat's shidding high-water mark for the year: "Cold take: edging makes shidding feel better".
  • 2023-01-11Evan Bbbender publishes the second-ever 420 Blaze It Leaderboard, showing Kyle 80, Evan 63, Cullen 61, Matt 19, Dan 1 — confirming after a 14-month interregnum that the leaderboard was a live institution rather than a single 2021 stunt.

Era statistics

  • Duration: 44 days
  • Total messages: ~3,729
  • Successor: Oops, All Hoeny Boys (Cullen, 2023-01-14).
  • Predecessor: Steamin' at Hennys (Evan, 2022-08-08).
