List of chat names

Chronological list of every name the iMessage group chat presently known as the Newfound Glory Hole has had since its first message on 2020-07-07. The chat has been renamed at least 22 times by five different members.

The chat has had no fewer than 22 distinct names in its first six years, recorded as item_type = 2 group-rename events in chat.db. The list below is generated directly from those events; duplicates (a single rename event sometimes produces two ledger entries due to iMessage cloud-sync) have been deduplicated to first-known instance only. The renamer is the in-chat sender of the rename event.

The pattern is, broadly:

  • 2020 β€” outdoorsy / cinematic naming, often by Matt or Evan.
  • 2021 β€” no recorded renames; this is the year the chat develops its private vocabulary, particularly hoeny (see Hoen).
  • 2022–2023 β€” the hoen / steam era. Kyle takes over as primary renamer in mid-2023, producing the Midsummer Night's Steam sequence.
  • 2025–2026 β€” accelerating renaming culminating in the four-rename burst of 2026-01-12 β†’ 2026-01-14 (Zynfidels β†’ Render Unto Steeler β†’ Render Unto Steezer) and finally to the current name on 2026-05-09.

Bolded entries are the names that lasted long enough to leave a structural mark on the corpus and have their own articles or significant cross-references.

Notable renames

Rugged Outdoorsmen (2020-08-13)

The chat's first known name. Set by Matt in the lead-up to the inaugural August 2020 group camping trip. The next day, Kyle Derrick thanks him explicitly: "Just noticed the rename on the group Matt, πŸ‘" (2020-08-14).

Gay Frogs and their Lizard Brides (2020-08-22)

Anonymously set; the Unknown renamer in this corpus is the dropped early member Matt O., who was removed from the chat by Kyle on 2020-08-21. iMessage retains his renames as ghost events without a resolvable handle. He was succeeded as namer by Evan Bbbender within hours.

Weekend at Hoenies (2022-07-30)

The first chat name to incorporate hoeny / hoen (see Hoen for etymology). Coined by Evan Bbbender roughly nine months after Kyle's founding "Great, now I'm hoeny" typo. This is the first formal evidence that the chat had begun to recognize hoeny as load-bearing rather than ephemeral.

Oops, All Hoeny Boys (2023-01-14)

The chat's second hoen-derived name and the one most fondly cited by veteran members. A reference to the Oops! All Berries line of Cap'n Crunch breakfast cereal, in which the marshmallow component is replaced by the chat itself. Renamed by Cullen Conway; remained in effect for ~4 months.

The "Midsummer Night's Steam" Trilogy (2023-06-13)

Kyle Derrick renamed the chat three times in a single day to progressively-corrected versions of the same Shakespeare reference: A midsummers night Steam β†’ A Midsummer night's Steam β†’ A Midsummer Night's Steam. iMessage records each as a separate event. Reading the rename log one is left with the impression of a man editing a press release in real time, because that is what was happening.

My freund ass is always shitting on cum night πŸ™„ (2025-12-31)

A New Year's Eve rename by Kyle Derrick which the encyclopedia, having reproduced the title once for the historical record, declines to discuss further.

Render Unto Steezer (2026-01-14)

Set by Evan Bbbender as a correction (within seconds) of his own Render Unto Steeler. Held the name for 115 days and roughly 5,972 messages before Kyle Derrick replaced it with the current Newfound Glory Hole on 2026-05-09. Many members still refer to the chat by this name in conversation.

Newfound Glory Hole (2026-05-09)

Set by Kyle Derrick four days before this encyclopedia's publication. The name draws on two earlier 2026 chat motifs: Cullen Conway's 2026-02-28 throwaway "Or maybe glory hole?" and Max Lieberman's 2026-05-08 disambiguation "New found glory hole". It is, as of this writing, the youngest name in the chat's history.
