Edging in the Newfound Glory Hole is the chat's preferred verb for deliberately prolonged self-restraint preceding eventual release. Across 73 corpus messages spanning 2020-10-02 → 2025+, the verb has been freely extended from its original sexual sense to cover essentially every other activity in which the chat takes a sustained position: bowel movements, hoen-lunch scheduling, financial decisions, and at least once a tax-firm relationship.
Etymology and earliest attestations
The earliest in-chat use is by Kyle Derrick on 2020-10-02, in what is the corpus's first edging-as-shidding extension:
"Anyone else edging a shid?" — Kyle Derrick, 2020-10-02
This message establishes the chat's settled convention that edging may be applied to any process that is being deliberately held in a state of imminence. Kyle elaborates the sense on 2020-11-25:
"Anyone else get sweaty when edging a shid?" — Kyle Derrick, 2020-11-25
By 2023 the practice had become explicitly doctrinal:
"Cold take: edging makes shidding feel better" — Kyle Derrick, 2023-01-08
This is, in the chat's terms, a recommendation. The encyclopedia accepts it on its face.
Cross-domain extensions
The verb's extension to non-bodily uses is documented across the corpus:
- 2023-02-02 — Matt introduces the edging-the-tax-firm extension: "We pay a tax firm so I have to edge my cum while shidding on a tax person". Kyle Derrick follows up the same day with the most carefully phrased clarification request in the corpus: "Does change if the person your shidding on is a tax firm agent?"
- 2023-05-05 — Kyle Derrick: "What about doing it while shidding?" — preserving edging-while-shidding as a parallel practice rather than a contradiction.
The 2023 chat-name proposal
The chat's only attempted use of edging as a chat-name component is the implicit 2023-02-11 Matt status report (see Cranking the hog), in which Matt's reading of the chat's seven activities — "Kyle is cranking his hog or shidding" — explicitly catalogs a state in which Kyle's hog-cranking, shidding, or edging are essentially interchangeable Sunday-morning activities.
Editorial note
Edging is a pre-coinage of the chat's broader lexicon of deliberate-restraint-with-eventual-release: see Hoencession for the same posture applied to Hoen Lunch scheduling, Hoendor for the same posture in extremis, and Cheeky Pint for the inverse — minimal-restraint, immediate-release.
