Matt O
The original eighth member of the iMessage group chat presently known as the **[[Newfound Glory Hole]]**. Removed from the thread by [[Kyle Derrick]] on **2020-08-21**, two months after the chat's founding, and the only member to have ever been kicked. Despite his absence, *Matt O* is invoked in the corpus eight times across five years as a kind of ghost figure — owner of useful trucks, victim of crimes, source of dubious information.
Matt O
The original eighth member of the iMessage group chat presently known as the Newfound Glory Hole. Removed from the thread by Kyle Derrick on 2020-08-21, two months after the chat's founding, and the only member to have ever been kicked. Despite his absence, "Matt O" is invoked in the corpus eight times across five years as a kind of ghost figure — owner of useful trucks, victim of crimes, source of dubious information.
Matt O. is the disambiguating designation of an early member of the chat — referenced by chat shorthand to distinguish him from the surviving Matt W. (whose handle and chat history continue uninterrupted to the present). Matt O. is the only documented case of a member being formally removed from the chat in its first six years.
The removal
The relevant exchange is from 2020-08-21, the day Kyle Derrick organized a camping trip that ultimately determined the group's standing membership. Kyle had earlier flagged Matt O's logistical situation:
"We all still in except Matt O?" — Kyle Derrick, 2020-08-21
The same day, Kyle posted the chat's only known kick message:
"Matt o, I am gonna drop you from this convo so as not to bother you with unneeded texts. If you can swing coming hit me up." — Kyle Derrick, 2020-08-21
The removal was not contested. Matt O. has not returned to the chat at any point in the subsequent corpus.
Posthumous appearances
Although Matt O. is no longer a sender in the chat, his name continues to surface in the corpus in eight distinct messages, in each case as an external resource or as comic ghost:
- 2020-08-05 — Kyle Derrick: "If Matt O can finagle his way there it will be an ultimate assembly™️" — the earliest reference, two weeks before his removal.
- 2021-05-19 — Evan Bbbender: "Matt O got his motorcycle stolen" — the chat checks in on Matt O. via second-hand crime reporting.
- 2021-05-20 — Matt (Matt W.): "Matt O has information that could lead to the arrest of Hilary Clinton?" — establishing Matt O. as a comic vector for intelligence reports.
- 2022-05-15 — Cullen Conway: "Maybe we can get Matt O to rig us up one of these and drunkenly motochariot around Irvington" — Matt O. as engineering consultant.
- 2022-07-11 — Cullen Conway: "And will you ask Matt O if I can borrow his truck."
- 2022-07-14 — Matt (Matt W.): "Yes can we borrow Matt O's truck?" — the only confirmed inter-Matt logistical question.
In the rename ledger
iMessage records rename events under the sender's resolved handle at the time of the rename, which leaves Matt O.'s post-removal renames as ghost events without a resolvable handle. The chat name "Gay Frogs and their Lizard Brides" (2020-08-22, set the day after his removal) is listed in this encyclopedia under Unknown — see List of chat names — but is, in editorial best-guess, attributable to Matt O.
